Over 700 students across campus participate in the Purdue ensembles. They are made up of the “All-American” Marching Band, the concert bands, the jazz bands, orchestras, and the auxiliaries: twirlers, the Colden Silks, and the Goldusters. We are proud to recognize the efforts of the honors students that dedicate their time to this creative endeavor and share some of their stories.
Kaitlyn Crawford, first-year honors nursing student and member of Nurses Christian Fellowship Club and Phi Mu describes her first concert with the Purdue Philharmonic Orchestra, 90 students who perform full symphonies with standard full symphony instrumentation.
Our first concert was probably my favorite memory so far. It was so awesome to be a part of such a professional-sounding orchestra. It was such a step up from my high school orchestra so being on stage performing with the Purdue Philharmonic Orchestra was such a great experience.
The “All-American” Marching Band performs every halftime show and travel to concerts around the world. Trent Arbough, first-year honors student in Chemistry for pre-med., practices trombone with the band every day for 3 hours. Trent describes how many performances they perform.
We perform at all of the home football games and we travel to a few of the away games, too. Every game day we do several concerts, including one at the 211 Session in Mackey, a post-game concert at Ross-Ade, and another post-game concert at Slayter.
We appreciate the efforts of all of our students who participate in the ensembles. The time and dedication it takes to develop these skills are impressive. We congratulate you, and we look forward to watching you perform.
